Making the switch to natural deodorant

Routine

I switched to natural deodorant about two years ago. After trying a few other natural deodorants on the market, I found routine cream. I’d heard for years that “regular” deodorant is bad for your body – it stops you from sweating, it blocks your pores, it has ALUMINUM that seeps into your skin. Eek!

My biggest fear about switching, though, was that I didn’t want to stink or deal with big pit stains under my arms. I’m a nervous sweater. I’m an athlete. I run and do fitness classes at lunch. I needed a deodorant that would stand up the challenge. Here’s the thing: It’s not a cheap $3 stick of deodorant. A tub of routine runs about $28 each. For me, applying once or sometimes twice times a day, a tub lasts me about three months.

I’m frugal, but over the past year or two, I’ve started to shell out money for quality, natural products (maybe it has something to do with turning 30?). Here’s why I’m willing to shell out for routine cream deodorant: It uses only clean, wholesome ingredients. It won’t hurt your body. It’s local (made right here in Calgary, Alberta!). And it actually works.

I asked the folks at routine why it’s a good choice for runners like me. As they pointed out, athletes spend much of their time ensuring (mostly) healthy products go into your body, to help fuel your body. However, they also believe that what you put ONTO your body goes into your body. As runners, we make sure we get enough protein, leafy greens, healthy fats – are we considering what is absorbed through our skin?

Since using routine deodorant, I notice that I actually sweat when I exercise now. I asked routine if that’s a good thing…and they told me that a sweaty body is a healthy body! Sweating is natural – don’t be ashamed and don’t block those pores. Not only does sweating cool a hot body, but it’s also vital to help runners stay hydrated. If you block your pores and thus your sweat from escaping, you lose that communication between body and mind and can run the risk of dehydration.

Interested in switching to natural deodorant? Routine offers 15 scents and five formulas (including vegan and gluten-free). I recommend trying a couple of samples to see which formula agrees with your body. They might smell different on you than they do in the tub! My favourite is The Curator, with a mild scent and gentle on sensitive skin. There are stores that stock routine in all Canadian provinces and territories, as well as various U.S. cities. Check routinecream.com to find a store in your city, or to order online.

If you try out natural deodorant, let me know what you think!

This post is not sponsored by routine cream. I just love to share my favourite products with others! My opinions are always my own.
